FOGSS 2024

April 3-5, 2024

University of Idaho

Moscow, ID

Conversations regarding the Future of Greenland ice Sheet Science (FOGSS) will continue April 3-5, 2024, with a hybrid meeting hosted at the University of Idaho. Participants are encouraged to join us in Moscow, Idaho, although we make every effort to ensure a quality experience for those only able to attend virtually. Please save the dates!

Travel

Travel to the University of Idaho campus is facilitated by easy travel (8 min from campus) to the Moscow-Pullman Airport (PUW). The airports in Lewiston, ID (LWS), and Spokane, WA (GEG), may also offer convenient itineraries. The map below left shows the airports in the vicinity of the University of Idaho with durations of the (all beautiful!) drives. Travel times below right represent flight + drive times from direct-flight airports to the University of Idaho.

A rental car is not necessary while at the workshop. Below are some options for travel to and from nearby airports.

  • From Moscow-Pullman Airport, the Best Western Hotel offers complimentary pickup and drop off. Please call the BW to schedule in advance: 208-882-0550

Rideshare services like Lyft and Uber are not always available in Moscow. For airport trips to other hotels or around town, schedule in advance via Moscow Taxi (208-892-4544) or College Cabs (855-829-4487).

  • The Lewiston Airport offers free shuttle transit to and from Moscow.

  • For the Spokane Airport, a rental car is likely the best option, potentially shared with other FOGSS attendees. Contact the meeting organizers for access to a ride-sharing spreadsheet.

Venue

Our in-person workshop will take place in the heart of the University of Idaho campus, in the Idaho Student Union Building.

Each day, we’ll be on the 4th floor in the “Summit Conference Center,” consisting of the Crest, Horizon, Aurora and Panorama conference rooms.

Shuttle vans will run between the BW University Inn and the venue each morning, or you may make the pleasant 20-minute walk.

Please be aware that on Thursday, April 4th, we’ll be starting with a field excursion that will depart from the BW University Inn at 8 am.

Lodging

Best Western Plus University Inn

A guest room block and special rates are being held at the Best Western Plus University Inn. The poster session and dinner on Wednesday night of the workshop will be held at this hotel. The Best Western conveniently offers free airport shuttle service to and from the Moscow-Pullman Airport. A separate shuttle will be available during the workshop to transport attendees between the hotel and the on-campus venus.

Prior to March 9, 2024, please visit Reservations or call 208-882-0550 x 0 and mention the “Greenland Conference.” When using the linkplease confirm your arrival and departure dates at the top of the first page.

After March 9th, lodging may still be available but not necessarily at the same, special rate. Please call the hotel phone number and let them know you’re with the “Greenland Conference” to see if the special rate might still be available.

For more information on the hotel, please visit Best Western Plus University Inn

Lovely walking path:

Please be advised that the BW University Inn is along a strip of car-centric, mall-like businesses—unfortunately quite different than the pedestrian friendly and distinct Main Street at the heart of Moscow. If walking from this strip mall to downtown or to the Idaho Student Union Building venue, be certain to cross the highway first to the south side of Paradise Creek, in order to walk along the lovely biking and walking path (“Paradise Path”). The blue-dotted route in the map below shows the recommended 30-min walking route between the BW University Inn and downtown, as well as the location of the ISUB where the workshop will take place.

Other recommended hotel

The Monarch Motel is Tim Bartholomaus’ personal lodging recommendation when visitors come to town. During FOGSS, it will not be as convenient for the poster session and dinner. However, the Monarch is central to Moscow’s charming downtown (w/ restaurants, coffee shops, pubs) and makes for easy walking to the campus venue (15 min). The Best Western, where the posters and dinner will be, are a 30 minute walk from The Monarch and from downtown.

A variety of other local and chain hotels are also available in Moscow: https://moscowchamber.com/staying-here/hotels-motels/
